A construction site entrance carries a lot of weight in terms of site safety. It's often the first thing a visitor, contractor, or inspector sees, and it sets the tone for how seriously the site takes its own rules.
Most entrances need to cover the same handful of things, even though the exact mix depends on the job and the site.
You'll usually need some combination of:
- An authorised access sign (who's allowed past this point)
- A visitor and contractor reporting sign
- A mandatory PPE sign for the site
- Emergency information (assembly point, first aid, site contact)
- Induction requirements, where they apply
- General site rules (speed limits, no smoking, mobile plant warnings)

A few quick questions usually settle it:
- Is this a residential build, a civil project, or a commercial site? The access rules and PPE requirements aren't the same across all three.
- Do you need a QBCC licence number displayed? That's a fixed requirement, not a design choice.
- Is induction required before anyone steps past the gate?
- Are there mobile plant or vehicle movements near the entrance itself?
- Has an audit or site visit already flagged something missing?
A bit more detail
There's no single layout that's correct for every site. A standard combination board is a solid starting point, but it only works if the information on it matches how your site actually operates. If your access rules, PPE requirements, or induction process are different from the last job, the sign needs to reflect that.
It's also worth keeping the entrance board focused on general conditions of entry. A hazard that only applies to one part of the site, like an excavation or an overhead work zone, is usually better handled with its own sign at that location rather than squeezed onto the entrance board.
